| Article: CLEAN HOUSE BRINGS DOWN THE HOUSE (BS.NET) |
Ashlee Crabbe from WAToday has given an excallend review from the opening night of Clean House. The opening night audience rarely had a break from laughter. The production was made all the more enjoyable by the talented actors, including big name Brooke Satchwell who stars as Brazilian girl Matilde. Matilde (Brooke) comes to work as a cleaning lady for hard-working doctors Lane and Charles, despite hating cleaning and preferring to dream of following the legacy of her deceased parents, who were comedians. Matilde's saviour comes in the form of Lane's sister Virginia, a neurotic cleaner who finds solace spending time with the young girl and takes over her cleaning duties. But the routine is turned on its head when Charles falls in love with cancer patient Ana, and it is revealed that this clean house is disguising messy lives. Written by Sarah Ruhl and directed by Kate Cherry, The Clean House is a joint production of the Black Swan State Theatre Company and the Queensland Theatre Company. Satchwell and Vivienne Garrett who plays Ana were entertaining with their impressive Spanish accents. Satchwell especially was charismatic, engaging and a joy to watch. A little disconcerting were the American accents from each other actor. But the entertainment value of Sarah McNeill and Carol Burns, as Lane and Virginia, as they took the audience on an emotional rollercoaster made it well worth it. The magnificent set, designed by Andrew Bellchambers, was also a huge highlight. The Clean House will be shown at the Playhouse Theatre until June 19, tickets are $54.50 with concession and family tickets available.

I saw the show Saturday night it was a real hoot; the central theme contains a lot of sadness, but the way it's been handled overall made it a great laugh. All the cast were great, but Brooke was outstanding; her accent, body language and attitude fitted perfectly, she just lived the part; she lit up the stage. The set was great, so was the lighting and the writing and direction were very clever. If you get the chance to go see it, take it.

According to the two reviews Jason found, including this one, the set was 'twee' or 'magnificent'. You can't please all of the people all of the time! Great picture!
