| Article: BROOKE SATCHWELL MAKES GOOD OF WHAT FATE DEALS HER (THE COURIER-MAIL) |
Writes Tonya Turner Before she knew it, she had a new role on Neighbours playing Anne Wilkinson and a Logie for Most Popular New Talent on the mantle. Now, 15 years later, another twist of fate has brought Satchwell her latest acting role in The Clean House, a co-production between the Queensland Theatre Company and Western Australia's Black Swan State Theatre Company. Actor Pia Miranda (Looking for Alibrandi) was set to play the part of the joke-cracking Brazilian house-cleaner in the production but she pulled out in March following the birth of her first child. A last-minute search for her replacement began. Satchwell was in a taxi on her way to the airport to fly to Las Vegas when she got the call asking if she would like to audition for the part. It had been 18 months since her last acting job because she had been working and training as a camera assistant. "Writing and photography were my two loves prior to accidentally falling into acting," she says. "This is the first time I've had the courage and the space to redirect my energies." A return to the stage was too good an opportunity to pass up. "It's something I've been quite keen to do again," she says. "I love acting and I love storytelling and although my focus has been on the other side for a long time now, it was just a bit hard to say no because theatre is thoroughly enjoyable in that it's a huge challenge. It's like running a marathon in terms of preparation and execution but the fact you have the elements there, and you're sharing that experience every night, it's pretty cool." Satchwell, 29, is chatty and down-to-earth and cackles throughout the interview. She is touring with the play for three months before jumping behind the camera once more and juggling assisting with acting roles. "It's not that I've turned my back on acting, it's just that there's a lot of things that interest me," she says. "People can't see how you could do both. They see it as an either/or situation. Also acting is perceived by some people as some sort of pinnacle. To suggest you might be interested in something else also suggests that something's gone wrong, or it didn't work out, but that's not the case at all. I just simply made a decision." Satchwell has starred in television shows including Trouble in Paradise, Canal Road, Dangerous, White Collar Blue, Beast Master and Water Rats and films including Subdivision, Corrections and Echo. Her personal life was thrown into the spotlight in 2006 when she split with long-time boyfriend Matthew Newton and had him charged with intimidation and assault. The case went to court, where Newton eventually pleaded guilty to assault. In 2008 Satchwell again found herself in the public eye when she was caught up in the Mumbai terrorist attacks. She was staying with her boyfriend in one of the hotels taken over by gunmen, but escaped unharmed. She doesn't deny these incidents had something to do with wanting to get out of the spotlight and behind the camera. "I think there's a million reasons as to why you make directional choices in your life," she says. "There have been things in my life that have courted very high publicity outside of my work. There was part of me that did want to retreat from that because it's not something that has any value to me." A socially and environmentally aware person, Satchwell has given her support to campaigns including Make Poverty History, Bottled Water Alliance and the Starlight Children's Foundation. "I'm very passionate about sustainability and justice and fairness," she says. "I hate to think there are people who don't get simple basic rights we take for granted, so I do feel compelled to be involved in programs and initiatives that address that and raise it above the noise and din of consumerism and shallow goals."
