SUBDIVISION GETS A SECOND CHANCE AT CINEMAS (16/02/2010)
NEWS ARTICLE   VIEW COMMENTS (3)   ADD COMMENTS

The Disney-distributed film will be released in Western Australia, with festival screenings in Europe and potential UK/France distribution deals.

Producer Trish Lake admitted that Subdivision disappointed in NSW and QLD, but the team has new strategies to ensure it reaches an audience in Australia and overseas.

“I’ve got investors who want to feel like we’re going to the wire, and that’s what we’re doing,” Lake told Encore. “Subdivision has had a tough time, but it hasn’t given up. We haven’t given up.”

Written by and starring Queensland radio personality Ashley Bradnam, the comedy/drama was directed by Sue Brooks and distributed by Disney in Australia, with an estimated budget of $4m and a box office result of $206,350.  It was released in August 2009 in Queensland and New South Wales only.

“It was always our ambition to do well in Australia, but when we started the rollout we were not getting the traction and we put a hold to it. It is a good film, and unfortunately we have not been able to find audiences in Australia yet,” said Lake.

“It’s very hard to make the sort of noise you need, even with a significant campaign such as the one that Disney brought to life. They were very solid, but we could not get the film somewhere between art house and multiplex cinemas,” admitted Lake.

But not all is lost and Subdivision will make its comeback to Australian screens, with further screenings in Western Australia in April.

“We’ll do a much more targeted campaign. We’ve learned from what went wrong with the QLD and NSW rollout, and we’ll be targeting by using special date screenings rather than a big first weekend wide release.

“Then we might be able continue to do that type of roll out in the other states and potentially we’d even come back to QLD and NSW,” explained Lake.

Additional lessons have been learned from the results of other films, such asMao’s Last Dancer and Bran Nue Dae; Lake says they have been analysing how and why audiences have engaged with ‘feel-good’ films with very targeted campaigns.

According to the producer, they have Disney’s ‘blessing’ for this new cinema strategy, but there is also pressure to release the DVD.

The film recently played at the Antipodes Film Festival in St Tropez, and will screen tomorrow night at a special presentation organised by the Australian embassy in Paris. Subdivision has also been accepted to play at the Barbican Film Festival in London next month and at the Cannes Cinephiles’ Cinema des Antipodes section at the Cannes Film Festival in May.

Lake said she was ‘hopeful’ of reaching a French and UK distribution deal later this year, with interest from French distributors generating after the audience’s positive reaction at the St Tropez screening.

NEWS ARTICLE   VIEW COMMENTS (5)   ADD COMMENTS

Brooke Satchwell, star of hit comedy Subdivision will be giving a speach this Saturday.

The event, organised by 'Make Povety History' is about standing up and taking action against povety.  The free event at Federation Square in Melbourne, will start at 11:00am for 2 hours.

Entertainment will include Melbourne Hip hop duo and former African refugees, Diafrix, local electronic crossover act METALS and DJ Matt Radovich along with speakers including Brooke Satchwell, Tim Costello and special guest Minar Pimple, deputy director of the United Nations Millennium Campaign.

As celebrity ambassador for the Make Poverty History campaign, Brooke said recently, 'Whilst we conduct our daily business with freedoms both rightful and relative, there are others in the world dealing with torment and injustice; injustice that you can only hope would be addressed if the shoe was on the other foot.'

The event is here to give ordinary Australians the opportunity to let its leaders know that we support their actions in keeping Australia's promise to do its part to reduce world povety by the year 2015.

Caroline Marcus
August 16, 2009

SHE survived the Mumbai terror attacks and a very public domestic violence dispute with Matthew Newton, but actress Brooke Satchwell is flying high again.
The 28-year-old former Neighbours star has told InStyle magazine - the September issue is out tomorrow - that her priorities in life had changed in the past year.
The Melbourne-based beauty nearly became a casualty in the terrorist attacks that killed at least 173 people last November, while working on a documentary in the Indian city with her partner, film editor David Gross.
Satchwell had ducked out of the Oberoi

Hotel, where the couple were staying, for a cigarette and stopped at the bathroom on her way back when gunfire broke out.
A year earlier, in 2007, her former partner of six years and fellow actor Matthew Newton was convicted of assaulting her in the Balmain home they shared, although the ruling was overturned by a Sydney judge.
''I know what my priorities are,'' Satchwell said. ''It's made me appreciate the value of a few seconds.'' Satchwell's new film Subdivision is an Australian comedy and will be screening on Thursday. 'I can be silly in real life, so it was good to bring that to my work.''

Subdivision follows the subcontracting business of Digger Kelly and his son Jack. These are genuine Australians; they work a full week, play rugby on the weekend and enjoy a beer or five afterwards.

Directed by Sue Brooks (Japanese Story) and produced by Trish Lake and Owen Johnston at Freshwater Pictures, Subdivision opens in cinemas from August 20.
