 THE CLEAN HOUSE (05/07/2010)
NEWS ARTICLE   VIEW COMMENTS (1)   ADD COMMENTS
'The Clean House' is a funny and enjoyable play, despite its serious subject matter: death, infidelity and the search for meaning.

Review by: Nigel Munro-Wallis
Rating: 4/5

Death is something we all try to avoid mentioning. As inevitable as it is we in the west find it a rather difficult subject to broach and prefer not to mention it even when its advent seems likely, such as in the case of terminal illness.

One of the themes running through The Clean House is a discussion on the inevitable death of one of the principal characters, Ana (Vivienne Garrett) who, having survived one round of surgery for breast cancer refuses to have any further treatment - preferring instead to 'develop a relationship with her own death' as she puts it, rather than with her illness.

Sound gloomy? Well believe me, it is not. This is only one theme among a number of others, including the emptiness of many lives that seemingly have everything but happiness; the justification for infidelity and the lack of fulfillment that much of what passes for 'work' gives us in the first world.

The story of The Clean House centres on Matilde (Brooke Satchwell) who comes to the United States to work as a maid for Lane (Sarah McNeill) a successful Doctor Married to a succes  ... READ FULL ARTICLE

A HOUSE KEPT IN PERFECT ORDER (03/07/2010)

Is a clean home a sign of an orderly life, or merely a coping mechanism for the chaos within?

By Sommer Tothill.
Reviewer Rating: 10/10

So asks The Clean House, the comical and moving new production by the Queensland Theatre Company.

Written by award-winning stateside playwright, Sarah Ruhl and directed by Kate Cherry, The Clean House is utterly unforgettable and just about perfect.

Rarely does a play move you to the extremes of belly-laughter in one act and tears in the next, but The Clean House pulls it off without a hitch.

When bad things happen, the only thing to do is laugh.

Vibrant young Matilde moves to the USA when her parents – the funniest couple in Brazil – literally die laughing. Working as a maid in the white, starkly modern house of successful doctor Lane (Sarah McNeill), Matilde finds she would much rather concoct jokes than keep the place tidy.

Matilde gratefully finds a domestic ally in Virginia (Carol Burns), Lane's cleaning-obsessed sister. Plagued by morbid subconscious fears, Burns is effortlessly funny as a frustrated housewife who confesses, “I don't like to laugh out loud.”

BROOKE SATCHWELL MAKES GOOD OF WHAT FATE DEALS HER (26/06/2010)
    NEWS ARTICLE   ADD COMMENTS
FATE has played a lead role in Brooke Satchwell's life. On a sick day from school, she was discovered by a casting agent at her mother's clothing company in Melbourne.
Writes Tonya Turner

Before she knew it, she had a new role on Neighbours playing Anne Wilkinson and a Logie for Most Popular New Talent on the mantle.

Now, 15 years later, another twist of fate has brought Satchwell her latest acting role in The Clean House, a co-production between the Queensland Theatre Company and Western Australia's Black Swan State Theatre Company.

Actor Pia Miranda (Looking for Alibrandi) was set to play the part of the joke-cracking Brazilian house-cleaner in the production but she pulled out in March following the birth of her first child.

A last-minute search for her replacement began. Satchwell was in a taxi on her way to the airport to fly to Las Vegas when she got the call asking if she would like to audition for the part.

It had been 18 months since her last acting job because she had been working and training as a camera assistant.

'Writing and photography were my two loves prior to accidentally falling into acting,' she says. 'This is the first time I've had the courage and the space to redirect my energies.'

A return to the stage was too good an opportunity to pass up.

'It's something I've been q  ... READ FULL ARTICLE
